Don't Cheat Easter

Tuesday, April 15, 2014

Winter is in its closing scenes (we hope) and that means the first warm weather holiday is almost upon us. But Easter, it creeps up. As we blearily wait for summer, it’s easy to be surprised by Easter Sunday and the once common tradition of a dining room brunch with extended family becomes a hasty call for restaurant reservations.

A recent conversation with a customer in the aisles of Blue Goose reminded me of this. Sometimes it’s easy to take for granted in the grocery business that we get to be a part of so many wonderful family traditions: from our kitchens, ovens and shelves to dining room tables throughout town, we’re all so often celebrating together.

So I’m here to fly the flag for what is supposed to be the best brunch of the year. Even more than that Easter is a marker and an important reminder to unfurl our lives back into sun rooms, porches, and outdoor spaces. Easter is an occasion for exaltation, the re-expansion of our lives past the confines of small rooms. We need to celebrate! Without Easter you could slide right through spring without notice and hardly hit a wrinkle till we’re well into summer!

Remember the glory of brown sugar glazed ham? Buttery croissants, petite-fore’s, casseroles and breakfast desserts? Here’s to hot Belgium waffles with real maple syrup and roast beef with horseradish.

Easter is April 20th this year. We hope no matter how you mark the occasion that you’re able to spend quality time with loved ones sharing a memorable meal.
